What it can identify, how the matching actually works, and how to get a usable answer out of an awkward image.

What a font finder does

A font finder answers one question: what typeface is this? You have a screenshot, a logo, a poster or a page of a PDF, you like the lettering, and you need a name you can search, license or download. Doing it by eye is possible, but there are tens of thousands of families in circulation and dozens of near-identical grotesques among them. Most people cannot separate Helvetica from Arial at a glance, let alone Inter from Roboto.

This one does the comparison mechanically. You give it an image; it measures the letters and ranks every font in its library by how closely the shapes actually agree — no account, no upload limit, and no paywall in front of the answer.

How this font finder from image works

Identification happens in three stages, and it is worth knowing which is which, because they fail in different ways. All three run in your browser — your image is never uploaded.

First, the lettering is split into letters. The image is reduced to ink and background, and each connected shape is picked out as a separate letter.

Second, each shape is matched to a character. Every shape is compared against a 16×16 fingerprint of every letter of every font in the library, and the character and the font are worked out together. That guess is shown to you before anything is identified, because a wrong letter quietly ruins the match and you can see at a glance when one is wrong.

Third, the closest candidates are re-checked by rendering. The fingerprints stretch every letter to fill its own box, which is what makes them work at any size and also what makes them blind to proportion — a condensed letter and a wide one leave the same fingerprint. So the leading candidates are re-tested by setting your text in each real font and comparing the whole word with its proportions intact.

That last step matters more than it sounds. The two methods get different fonts wrong, so combining them beats either: across twenty test images the fingerprints alone and the rendering alone each put the right font first 14 times, while the two together manage 16, with the correct font in the top five every single time.

Font finder by image, font finder by text

Nearly every font finder works from an image, and there is a good reason for it. A typeface is a set of shapes, and plain text carries no shapes — a font finder by text has nothing to measure, because the letters you type arrive in your font, not the one you are asking about.

So the split is simple. If you already know the name, you do not need identification at all: search the free font library by name, category, weight or shape and go straight to the specimen. If you only have a picture, use the image. On a Mac press ⌘⇧4, on Windows Win+Shift+S, then paste straight into the box above with ⌘V — no saving, no file picker.

What you can identify

This is an image font finder first, so anything you can get into a picture is fair game. Upload an image, drag one onto the page, or paste from the clipboard — the source matters less than how clearly the letters come through.

  • Screenshots of websites and apps — the easiest case by far, because the letters are pixel-sharp, horizontal and undistorted. The screenshot font finder is tuned for exactly this.
  • Logos and wordmarks — often customised or redrawn by hand, so expect a close relative rather than an exact hit. The logo font identifier covers what to crop and what to leave out.
  • PDF pages — a PDF usually records its fonts internally, and reading that list beats any visual match. The PDF font detector shows where to find it before you fall back to a screenshot.
  • Handwriting and script — the hardest case, because joined-up letters cannot be measured one at a time. The handwriting font finder says so plainly rather than inventing a confident answer.
  • Photos of signs, packaging and print — fine, as long as the text is roughly straight-on and in focus. Perspective and blur distort the letterforms, and the letterforms are the whole signal.

A free font finder, and what free means here

Free means free in each of the ways that usually costs something: no account, no email, no trial period, no cap on how many images you run, and no paid tier that unlocks the real results. You can identify a font from an image, free, as often as you like — the heavy part of the work runs in your browser, so more scans cost us nothing.

The results are free fonts too. Every ranked match is an open-source family licensed for commercial use, with a specimen, a download and copy-paste CSS on its page. That is deliberate: a font finder that names a typeface you would have to pay £300 for and then stops has mostly told you what you cannot have.

The Google font finder behind every match

The library the matcher searches is the open-source Google Fonts catalogue — 1,942 families, each one measured rather than merely listed. Every family has a page with a live specimen, its measurements (stroke contrast, letter width, x-height, stem weight), suggested pairings, visually similar faces and the CSS to embed it.

So it works in both directions. Use it as a Google font finder and browse by category, weight and shape when you know roughly what you want — or work backwards from an image and let the ranking find the family for you.

How to get a better match

  • Crop tightly. Select the words and nothing else — no icons, no background, no tagline. This single step does more for accuracy than any setting.
  • One size and one weight per crop. A heading and body text in the same selection pull the measurements in two directions.
  • Give it several letters. Two or three characters is thin evidence; a full word or two is much stronger.
  • Favour lowercase. Lowercase letters carry far more identifying detail than capitals — an all-caps logo is genuinely harder.
  • Straight on and in focus. Rotate a photo upright first if the line of text is tilted.
  • Light text on dark is fine. Polarity is detected automatically, so upload it as it is.

Free alternatives to paid typefaces

Commercial fonts still get named. When the letterforms point at Helvetica Neue, Proxima Nova, Gotham, Futura or Avenir, you are told so and linked to the foundry — and then handed the closest free stand-in, because replacing it is usually the real task. The free font alternative finder starts from that end instead.

A good alternative will not be identical, and does not need to be. Matching the proportions and the texture on the page — x-height, letter width, stroke weight — is what readers actually notice; the shape of a single terminal is not.

Why is my result wrong?

Accuracy depends heavily on the crop. Tight crops around clean, separated, horizontal letters work best. Joined-up script fonts are hardest, because the letters cannot be measured individually — we tell you when that happens rather than guessing.
